EDMONTON — From the earth-filled boxes sprouting leafy herbs to the slick gelato machine, the new Skill Centre kitchen at Amiskwaciy Academy gleams with professionalism.

Cobbled together with corporate donations, provincial government grants and scads of goodwill, the facility represents a shift at the Edmonton public school board toward offering more hands-on and practical experience in careers that await after high school graduation. The new culinary arts course is just one of several trade-focused programs (including aviation maintenance and health care) that now connect high school students with NAIT programs
