The Great George Hotel nominated for "Canada's Leading Hotel" by the 2010 World Travel Awards
June 16 2010
The Great George – Charlottetown's Historic Boutique Hotel – has received the honour of being nominated the title of "Canada's Leading Hotel" by the 2010 World Travel Awards.
The World Travel Awards, heralded by the Wall Street Journal as the "Travel industry's equivalent to the the Oscars", are the most prestigious awards program in the global travel industry. To be awarded one has become the one of the highest accolades a travel destination can receive.
The nominees are selected by travel professionals from over 180,000 travel agencies in more than 160 countries across the globe.
Additional nominees for this award include the Halifax Marriott Harbourfront, the Park Hyatt in Toronto, and Vancouver's Pan Pacific, among others.
"The nomination is a tremendous honour for us at The Great George," said Rachel Vidito, General Manager of The Great George. "Although we're competing against some large-scale, branded chains across the country, we take pride in offering what we believe to be an exceptional and unique accommodation experience. Any one who has ever visited The Great George is more than welcome to vote for us."
The Great George is a unique collection of 15 award-winning heritage buildings located in the heart of downtown Charlottetown. Each carefully restored building has a story and character all its own. With its proximity to many local landmarks, including Province House, the Charlottetown Waterfront and St. Dunstan's Basilica, The Great George has also long been known as an ideal location in which to begin exploring and visiting the sites of the capital city.
Kevin Murphy, co-owner of The Great George, said the vote is more meaningful than just honouring The Great George itself; he believes the nomination and recognition the hotel receives is another step in ensuring that Prince Edward Island is being recognized as a world-class travel destination.
"I see this nomination (for The Great George) as a reflection of the goodwill and hospitality that abounds in the city of Charlottetown and the province of Prince Edward Island in general," he said. "The World Travel Awards is an opportunity to put the Island's hospitality industry on the global map."
