Tourists huddle in fur-trimmed parkas around a hole in the ice on Wakeham Bay.

Their guide is explaining the local winter tradition of collecting mussels under the sea ice. Although hesitant to climb down into the narrow hole, the visitors are clearly impressed with yet another of the unique charms of this community on the northern coast of Nunavik.

"You ain't seen nothing yet," said the guide, master outdoorsman Yaaka M. Jaaka.
