    Labour Force Survey Highlights January 2012

    In January 2012, the unemployment rate in the tourism sector was 7.9%, which was virtually unchanged from the rate reported in January 2011. In the Canadian economy overall, the (seasonally adjusted) unemployment rate was 7.6%. Within the tourism industry groups, employment in accommodations, and recreation & entertainment increased in comparison to January 2011, while no change was recorded in food and beverage services. Travel services saw the largest year-over-year change in the unemployment rate (+4.6%). On a Provincial basis, tourism unemployment rates ranged from 5.3% in Alberta and Saskatchewan to 27.7% in PEI.

    Industry Canada Releases Financing Profile of Small and Medium-Sized Tourism Businesses

    The Canadian Tourism Human Resource Council (CTHRC) is pleased to announce that the Small Business Branch of Industry Canada has released A Small Business Financing Profile focused on the tourism sector. The CTHRC was pleased to provide its expertise and advice throughout the development of the study, and Scott Meis, CTHRC’s Special Advisor on Evaluation and Research, is cited as an external reviewer of the study.

    Ontario Tourism Education Corporation to Lead Workforce Development Strategy Project

    The Ontario Tourism Education Corporation (OTEC) has been contracted by the Tourism Industry Association of Ontario to create a provincial Tourism Workforce Development Strategy. The CTHRC would like to congratulate OTEC, its partner human resource organization in Ontario, as they begin work on this important project being funded through the Tourism Development Fund and the Ministry of Tourism and Culture.

    Labour Force Survey Highlights - November 2011

    In November 2011, the unemployment rate in the tourism sector was 6.5%. This was 1% lower than the rate reported in November 2010. In the Canadian economy overall, a notable employment decrease brought the (seasonally adjusted) unemployment rate up to 7.4%. Despite recent declines, employment was up 1.2% compared to November 2010.

    CTHRC Pursues Partnership Opportunities on International Project

    In November, the CTHRC met with the Association of Canadian Community Colleges (ACCC) in Ottawa to discuss how the CTHRC could be involved in the ACCC’s CARICOM Education for Employment Project (C-EFE). Still in its formative stage, this regional program is CIDA-funded and co-designed, and aims to the reduce unemployment and poverty levels by strengthening the technical and vocational training systems of twelve CARICOM countries in various industry sectors including tourism. The ACCC and CTHRC agreed to continue partnership discussions on how the Council’s experience in developing Labour Market Intelligence, emerit Occupational Standards, Training and Certification could advance the C-EFE project.

    CTHRC Delivers Presentation to Tourism Educators

    At the CTHRC Educators’ Partners Meeting in Charlottetown, PEI in November, CTHRC staff delivered a presentation entitled “Labour Market Information: An Opportunity for Educators”, which included a historical overview of the CTHRC’s work around Labour Market Information (LMI). The Council was able to showcase its LMI to more than 25 representatives of college and university tourism programs throughout Canada. A constructive discussion of increased cooperation to enhance the use and benefits of CTHRC’s LMI assets followed the presentation.

    CTHRC Continues Work to Enhance Postsecondary Tourism Programs

    As a side meeting to the CTHRC Tourism Educators’ Partners Meeting in November, the CTHRC met with a representative of the University of Guelph School of Hospitality and Management to discuss their proposal to develop two new advanced education programs in tourism and hospitality. Areas of discussion included improved connections between CTHRC’s Labour Market Research Program and the coverage of tourism human resource management issues and associated Labour Market Information on tourism employment and labour characteristics in new tourism program curricula.

    CTHRC Continues Collaboration with Industry Canada

    In November, the CTHRC had conversations and with Andrea Pierce, Economist of the Small Business and Tourism Branch of Industry Canada, to discuss the appropriate terminology to use in describing new information emerging from custom data tabulations on small and medium size businesses in the tourism sector in Canada, as identified by the Canadian Tourism Satellite Account. This built on previous discussions at the Travel and Tourism Research Association Conference held in London, Ontario in June, 2011.

    10th Annual Tourism & Hospitality HR Forum Had People Dancing and Singing…Literally

    Over a year ago, the great folks at the Tourism Industry Association of Prince Edward Island (TIAPEI) guaranteed the organizers of the HR Forum (the Canadian Tourism Human Resource Council) perfect weather and unsurpassed hospitality, and they delivered on both in spades. Under beautiful blue skies and mild weather, 140 delegates came together to hear innovative new approaches to HR, inspiring stories of challenges overcome, and an agenda packed with HR takeaways for their own operations. This year’s Forum kicked off with a reception at the Rodd Charlottetown, where delegates were welcomed by Don Cudmore, Executive Director of TIAPEI, and HR Forum Master of Ceremonies Dean Sockett, Director of Human Resources, Keg Restaurants Ltd. Turnout was great and delegates were excited for the first day of content.

    White Point Beach Resort Receives National Award for Tourism Excellence in Human Resource Development

    (Ottawa, Ontario – November 25, 2011) Nova Scotia’s White Point Beach Resort took home the top prize for Human Resource Development at the Tourism Industry Association of Canada’s Tourism Leadership Summit. The award, which was presented by Canadian Tourism Human Resource Council (CTHRC) President Wendy Swedlove, recognizes a business that has demonstrated a commitment to professionalism in the Canadian tourism workforce through professional recognition, training, and excellence in human resource management.
