December 13 2011
In November 2011, the unemployment rate in the tourism sector was 6.5%. This was 1% lower than the rate reported in November 2010.
In the Canadian economy overall, a notable employment decrease brought the (seasonally adjusted) unemployment rate up to 7.4%. Despite recent declines, employment was up 1.2% compared to November 2010.
Compared to November 2010, employment levels in all five tourism industries have increased or remained fairly stationary. Accommodations industries saw the largest year-over-year change in the unemployment rate (-4.6%), while very little movement was seen in the other industry groups.
On a Provincial basis, tourism unemployment rates ranged from 2.4% in Manitoba to 19% in PEI. In most jurisdictions, the unemployment rate in tourism industries was similar to, or lower than, the rate in the economy overall.
