The Honourable Monte Solberg, Minister of Human Resources and Social Development, the Honourable Colin Hansen, Minister of Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Asia-Pacific Initiative and the Olympics for British Columbia, and the Honourable Olga Ilich, British Columbia's Minister of Labour and Citizens' Services, this week announced improvements to the Temporary Foreign Worker Program. These improvements will make it faster for employers in British Columbia and Alberta to hire foreign workers when there are no Canadian citizens or permanent residents available to fill the position.

The Canadian Tourism Human Resource Council (CTHRC), with the assistance of its provincial and territorial partners, recently completed the first ever national survey to collect compensation and benefits data from tourism establishments in three key industries: Accommodations, Food and Beverage Services, and Recreation and Entertainment. Specifically, the survey requested data for 28 different occupations at all levels, from frontline to senior management.

The Canadian Tourism Human Resource Council (CTHRC) held its most successful Tourism HR Forum April 30 – May 1. The event theme, “Can tourism deliver? Responding to the HR Crisis,” was well received by delegates looking for solutions to their specific human resources challenges. The 250 delegates heard from an exceptional line-up of keynote and panel speakers on subjects including: working with various generational pools; mining the strengths of cultural diversity; becoming an employer of choice; and a number of other timely subjects.

This past week, the Human Resource Module of the Tourism Satellite Account, Update to 2005 was released by Statistics Canada. In partnership with the Canadian Tourism Commission (CTC), the Tourism Industry Association of Canada (TIAC), Human Resources and Social Development Canada (HRSDC) and the Canadian Tourism Human Resource Council (CTHRC), Statistics Canada is leading the world in developing a Human Resource Module for a Tourism Satellite Account.

Chantal Smitheram, Casting Director at the Brookstreet Hotel in Ottawa, received the Hotel Association of Canada’s Hall of Fame Award of Excellence last night, winning in the Human Resources category. The award is sponsored by the Canadian Tourism Human Resource Council (CTHRC) and emerit Tourism Training, and was presented during an awards dinner at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto.
