In Montreal on March 22 - 24, the CTHRC met with 19 Food and Beverage Managers from all around the world to review a draft of the emerit Food & Beverage Management International Competency Standard. The lively meeting generated invaluable feedback to move the standard forward, and the level of engagement demonstrated by participants is promising for the successful promotion of emerit across the world.

The CTHRC travelled to Prince Edward Island on March 28-31 to meet with Canadian Academy of Travel and Tourism (CATT) teachers on the Island. Five of seven CATT schools were represented at the meeting, as well as a representative from the Department of Education. This professional development activity gave teachers opportunities to network and share ideas, while opening the doors to future collaboration.

On March 28 – 29, the CTHRC attended the Canadian Special Event Meeting Expo (CSEME) in Toronto to raise awareness of emerit Event Coordinator, Event Manager, and Certified Event Management Professional training and certification. CSEME participants were particularly interested in National Occupational Standards, training products, and CTHRC research materials.

On March 19 – 20, the CTHRC connected with CATT schools in Manitoba. Representatives from Manitoba Tourism Education Council (MTEC) and Red River College also attended the meeting, which allowed all participants to learn more about what the others had to offer and potentially open doors to new opportunities for collaboration.

Event management professionals from around the world gathered in Ottawa on March 19 – 20 to make recommendations on policies and procedures for international certification program administration and governance, and to review and validate the International Events Qualification Framework. Participants were enthusiastic about developing a comprehensive international career path for practitioners in the field.

From March 5 – 7, the CTHRC attended the Hotel Association of Canada (HAC) conference, which included the Online Revealed Canada event and the Canadian Tourism Marketing Summit. Event participants were especially interested in learning more about the upcoming 2012 HR Forum, emerit training and certification products, and CTHRC’s Labour Market Information.

On February 23, a group of 22 Employment Service Providers (ESP) from Ontario came to Ottawa to learn about the Tourism Employment Kit, an online orientation kit that directs ESPs to the CTHRC’s resources. The CTHRC gained valuable feedback, and ESPs agreed that the CTHRC’s tools were valuable and that they will help their clients secure employment.

In February, the CTHRC hosted an Industry Validation Committee meeting to validate testing criteria for the Retail Sales Associate (SAA) certification. Ten participants from various types of retail outlets across Canada attended the meeting in Ottawa where they contributed valuable feedback that will ensure that testing accurately reflects the day-to-day realities of SAA duties.

In March 2012, the unemployment rate in the tourism sector was 6.7%, down 1.6% from the rate reported in March 2011 (8.3%).
In the Canadian economy overall, employment increased by 82,000 in March bringing the (seasonally adjusted) unemployment rate down 0.2 percentage points to 7.2%. Compared with 12 months earlier, employment in the Canadian economy was up 1.1%. Almost all of this growth was in full-time employment (+1.3%).

IATA Training and Development Institute Chooses emerit to Supply Hospitality Training Worldwide

An international association of airlines, IATA promotes safe, regular, and economical air transport for citizens all over the world. It connects members of the air transport industry and facilitates global collaboration within the industry. The IATA Training and Development Institute (ITDI) offers a wide range of professional training options to employees of air transport enterprises, international students, and individuals starting their career. When the Institute identified the need for a hospitality training program, a search for training solutions discovered emerit. With emerit’s “for industry, by industry” product development philosophy, ITDI decided it was the right solution.
